What is mastering?
Mastering is the final process applied to a track before it reaches its delivery medium, be it vinyl, CD, MP3, DVD etc. It can be considered ‘polishing’ a track, and for mastering to be really effective, ‘polishing’ is the desired process.
What does this mean?
Well, mastering is also a ‘correction’ process, in which problems missed in the mixing stage can be fixed. This includes problems such as, noise, hum, kick drum too boomy, bitey guitars, clicks and pops. However, when mastering is used to compensate for these problems, rather than simply ‘polish’ a track, the overall results are compromised.
So what will we do in mastering?
We listen to your track/s and;
- correct issues such as noise, clicks, pops, ‘problem frequencies’
- balance the frequencies and loudness so they sit well together on CD
- create fade ins and fade outs
- adjust gap lengths between tracks for musical transitions
- enter information for CD Text such as album and track titles
- enter UPC and ISRC codes
- burn a CD for the pressing plant
